(and duh--who asked who sent it out? Let's see, Doug says that the person
who wrote it asks that SHE remain nameless. Doug is married to a zero.
Hmmmm. Well Watson, who could it be?)
Of the two sites Doug did find (oh the horror!) one did note that it was a
hoax. Also, Rich's name was never in the blurb--it was the original zero
message's timing, I believe, that put it together. Or I might have had
Rich's name in the stuff around the bank loan email and my parody of it--the
intent being something to "cheer him up" after orals (well I failed
miserably at that I guess! Sorry!)
The email was forwarded outside of the email list without by name
(thankfully), nor the original, not the reason for the parody--to make Rich
laugh--they were all removed. And thus it made it's way across America and
back. Foley from Brown (or VanDam--one of them) even asked Brooks about it)
As an aside--I did Confess TO Dr. Brooks how the story "happened" and that I
was the author--I felt I owed him that, as the story could be interpreted as
malicious (instead of just stupid). I was already working, and I was
absolutely MORTIFIED when all the reports started coming back (cheers to
Rich for maintaining a straight face when Dr. B. read it at the weekly
projects meeting though--I was long gone but heard about it). Dr. B. was
extremely gracious when I 'fessed up, I will admit. Just as gracious as
when several o fus walked into Sitterson at 1:00am with SOMEONE (Hello TRB)
trying to hide a PYLON behind his back, and all of us trying to act sober,
which we most certainly were not. There is nothing more obvious than drunk
people trying to act sober! He graciously pretended not to notice. "No sir.
We don't know anything about a fire alarm going off" (really. We didn't. We
hadn't been there. And we certainly did not EXPECT to see Dr. Brooks there
at 1:00am!)
Somewhere I have the original and all the places it came from....It took 2
weeks for the reports to start coming back. A lesson in Urban Legends! I'm
surprised it's still out there though! Yikes!
Ta,
CV
p.s. I ran into Dr. B at an independent schools conference a couple years
ago. All he knew about me was that I went to UNC. Let's not remind him of
this!!
